RCA 74B Junior Velocity Ribbon (Vintage)

RCA introduced the first of its ribbon velocity microphones in the early 1930’s.  They were expensive, high quality units intended primarily for broadcast, film, and recording work.  They saw a market for a smaller, less expensive model for less demanding applications, and so the Junior Velocity microphone was developed.  It was introduced in 1935 and remained in production through the 1950's.
The RCA 74 ribbon microphone is ideal for harsh high frequency sources.

In design the Type 74-B is very similar to the larger 44-BX, but lacks the latter’s shock mounting and transformer shielding. The transformer output impedance taps are for 50, 250, and 15,000 ohms. The windscreen is finished in satin chromium and the base is umber gray. Attached to the base is a ball and socket joint which permits rotation or tilting at any angle.
