Soundcraft Vi4 Cat5 Digital Live Sound Console System

The wait is over... Say hello to the Soundcraft Vi4 digital live sound console!
Only months after the introduction of the highly successful Soundcraft Vi6, the Vi Series of digital live sound consoles has been extended with the new Soundcraft Vi4 model, offering all the functionality and facilities of the Soundcraft Vi6, but in a smaller, more compact footprint more suited for space-conscious applications such as Theatres, Houses of Worship and venues or clubs with space-limited mix positions.

In just under 5 feet wide, the Soundcraft Vi4 offers access to 48 inputs on 24 faders, with a total of 27 output busses available for use as masters, groups, auxes or matrices. All other features of the Soundcraft Vi6, such as the highly acclaimed Vistonics II touch-screen user interface, Soundcraft FaderGlow fader function display and the unequalled audio quality are inherited by the Soundcraft Vi4.
  • Featuring Vistonics II interface which builds rotary encoders and switches right onto the touch screen
  • 48 input channels and 27 outputs, 24 of which can be configured as auxes, groups or matrix
  • 24 input fader control surface with 8 masters plus LCR and monitor faders
  • 4 band Parametric EQ, compressor, limiter and gate available on all inputs and outputs
  • Includes digital snake which supports multiple stage boxes
  • On board world-renowned Lexicon effects processing with 8 stereo processors
  • 27 BSS third-octave graphic EQ’s, one on every output channel

The Vi4 Cat5 System consists of three components : a compact control surface, the local rack with the SCore Live processing engine, and a stagebox which connects conveniently to the local rack via Cat5 or Cat7 cable, with fibre optic interfacing available as an option. The 24 fader control surface delivers simultaneous mixing of 48 mono inputs into 27 outputs, with 24 insert send/return pairs assignable to any of the input or output channels. All input channels can have direct outputs (when sufficient I/O is available) in addition to their internal routing to 32 Group/Aux/Matrix busses, and the main LCR and LR busses.

Sound quality is assured by a combination of ultra-low noise mic amp designs and Studer advanced 40-bit floating point digital audio processing. The Vistonics II channel strip display functions both as a overview of all the current settings for 8 channels per screen, and as the access point for immediate hands-on control of any of those settings. Simply touching the screen in one of the six vertically stacked touch zones immediately opens out that part of the strip onto the 16 real knobs and switches mounted directly on the lower part of the display, allowing immediate, tactile, analog style control.

Local rack I/O includes 16 analog line inputs, 3 mic/line inputs, 1 talkback mic input, 8 pairs of AES/EBU inputs, 64 ch optical MADI in, 16 analog line outputs, 8 pairs of AES/EBU outputs, 3 LCR local monitor A line outputs, 2 LR local monitor B line outputs, TB line output, and 64 ch optical MADI out. Stagebox I/O includes 64 analog mic/line inputs (w/remote gain control, 48V and pre A-D 100Hz HPF), 32 analog line outputs. Optional AES/EBU input and output cards are available for the stagebox.

At the heart of the Soundcraft Vi control surface lies the patented Vistonics II system. Obviating the ergonomic limitations of arranging controls around or adjacent to a flat TFT screen. Vistonics II builds the rotary encoders and switches right onto the touch screen. With the visual information and operational controls combined in one area, the burden of complex mental mapping is removed from the operator, streamlining workflow and enhancing the creative process.
Each Vistonics II interfaces controls eight input channels, and comprises of a touch screen with 16 rotary encoders and 16 switches.

A simple touch of the screen is all it takes to access channel functions including routing, input gain, digital gain trim, delay, high and low pass filters, 4-band fully parametric EQ, compressor, limiter, gate, de-esser and pan, with immediate access to a sophisticated visual status display and straightforward controls.
In addition, a dedicated Vistonics II interface is provided for output processing control, and also functions as a complete meter overview display for all inputs and outputs, as a snapshot cue list display, and as a display for diagnostics information.

HiQnet integration allows the simple creation of Cue Lists from console snapshots, MIDI events and HiQnet Venue Recall commands, which can be used to trigger changes in amplifier levels, loudspeaker processing EQ and routing across an entire HiQnet system. Compatibility with the HiQnet protocol also enables the console to receive and display system diagnostic messages from other devices on the HiQnet network.

Soundcraft FaderGlow illuminates the fader track in colours that integrate with those of Vistonics II to show at glance what function a fader is controlling at any given time.

The angle of the panel housing the touch screens has been carefully chosen to ensure that the engineer can always view display data clearly during the show. The brightness and contrast of the displays, and the illumination of the control surface itself, are designed to minimize strain on the eye.

The Vi Series Processor Card adds on-board BSS third-octave Graphic Equalization to every bus output, in addition to 8 independent stereo Lexicon multi-effects units - each providing 14 reverbs, 7 delays and 8 pitch shifting effects, patchable to input channels, aux outputs and channel inserts.

A series of interface cards enables direct integration of a Vi Series console with other systems and audio networks using industry standard protocols.
Examples :
  • A-NET 16V card
  • CobraNET card
  • MADI interface
Max number of simultaneous mixing channels :
48 mono inputs into 27 Outputs. Pairs of mono inputs can be linked to create stereo channels.

Insert points :
24 insert send/return pairs can be configured (using available I/O) and assigned to any of the 48 inputs or 27 output channels.

Direct Outputs :
48 input channels can have direct outputs in addition to their internal bus routing, assuming sufficient I/O is available (eg optical MADI card).

Busses :
24 Grp/Aux/Matrix, plus main LCR Mix and LR Solo busses (maximum of 16 matrix outputs can be configured).

Connectivity :
Connection from local rack to stagebox: Standard fit: Cat5 or Cat7 cable, with Amphenol RJF connectors.
Max distance, local rack to stagebox: 80m using flexible reel-mounted Cat5 cable, 130m using Cat7 permanent installation cable.
Flexible, reel-mounted Cat5 cabling enables the mixing position to be located up to 80 meters from the stage. Does not include Cat 5 cable.

GPIO facility :
There are 16 GPIO contact closure inputs and outputs on the local rack, and 8 inputs and outputs on the stagebox.

MIDI :
There is 1 MIDI In and 2 MIDI Outs on the rear of the control surface.

Miscellaneous :
Controls for Mute Group (x 4) and VCA Group (x 16) assignment. Controls for assignment of Vistonics rows to bus sends (when channel parameters are not selected to Vistonics). Snapshot automation controls. Talkback controls. Controls for Monitor Output level, phones level and Solo Trim and blend level.
