Gates Sta Level (Vintage) Vari-MU Tube Compressor 1950’s
About the Gates Sta-Level
Originally designed for broadcast in 1956 the Gates Sta-Level became a fast favorite for record producers. Now originals like this are highly sought after on the vintage market. The 6386 Dual triode tube in the gain reduction control circuit is part of the magic and uniqueness. As the input signal being fed into the compressor increases in amplitude, the current being sent to the vacuum tube’s grid decreases, which reduces the output level of the compressor. The variable-mu design is program-dependent. The compression ratio varies as the input signal changes. The Sta-Level is capable 40dB of gain reduction, the make up stage is good for 35dB but the device can also be brought up to mic level with over 60dB of amplification with the output pad removed. The signal path is transformer balanced and has a 6V6 output stage.
This is a nice example with all “vintage tubes” original electronics and transformers. Solidly constructed with piano hinge and thumbscrews the faceplate swings down for east access to the internal attack time selector. (Single or Double) Tested, serviced and sounding amazing. We are offering this piece with a 90 Day warranty
