The U47 FET was introduced in 1969, when Telefunken had stopped production of the VF14 tube used in the original U47 microphone. Neumann decided to re–engineer the U47 as a solid–state, fixed cardioid, using a field–effect transistor (FET) to provide the high–impedance interface with the capsule as opposed to a VF14 Tube.

Because the U47 Fet had the ability  to handle 147dB SPL with the 10dB pad it became the professional studio standard for kick and bass, (although not limited to) while the original U47 was always the defacto standard for vocals. Basically you had to have both.
