API 550A Discrete 3 Band EQ 500 Series (Used)
12 used modules available in pristine condition. Less than 50 hours use.
Few equalizers command the respect and admiration that the API 550A Discrete 3 Band EQ does. Born from the visionary mind of Saul Walker in the late ’60s, this legendary device was initially introduced as a modular OEM equalizer. Its stunning sonic quality quickly earned it a place in the designs of iconic consoles crafted by Frank DeMedio and other renowned engineers—some of which still thrive in studios today.
Fast forward four decades, and the API 550A remains the gold standard in the world of equalizers. With a storied history deeply woven into the fabric of the recording industry, it has shaped sound for generations. Despite numerous imitators, there has never been a true replacement for the 550A. When API began producing consoles in 1971, this exceptional EQ became the cornerstone of their channel module offerings. The overwhelming demand for the 550A led to its revival in production in 2004, with nearly all units spoken for from the outset.
What makes the 550A such a powerful tool? It features reciprocal equalization across 21 selectable points, with five distinct boost steps allowing for a maximum gain of 12dB at each frequency. The fifteen equalization points are carefully divided into three overlapping ranges, tailored to suit a variety of audio needs. Both the high and low frequency ranges can be selected as either peaking or shelving, while a band pass filter can be effortlessly added to the mix—independently of other equalization settings. Navigating through frequency ranges and boost/cut options is a seamless experience with three dual concentric switches, accompanied by a pushbutton “in” switch for silent insertion into the signal path. A handy toggle switch allows for the band pass filter to be engaged, enhancing the versatility of this remarkable EQ.
With its unparalleled craftsmanship and sonic prowess, the API 550A Discrete 3 Band EQ continues to inspire and elevate the art of sound engineering.
