The Empirical Labs EL8-XXX Distressor is a limited edition 30th anniversary edition of the famous EL8 Distressor. It includes all of the upgraded features found on the EL8X (Stereo Image Link, Brit Mode), now coupled with the famous Triad HS-56 transformer at the input stage, known for its ability to add clarity and “size” to sub content. In addition to saturation and color, this transformer also greatly reduces input impedance to 600 ohms. These changes, plus some new discrete parts, allow for the XXX model to saturate and color earlier than the classic EL8 – it’ll make a mix’s low-end sparkle like no other.

UNIQUE COMPRESSION CURVES

The Empirical Labs EL8X compressor features eight selectable compression curves, each designed to offer a distinct sonic character. From transparent leveling to extreme peak limiting, these eight unique curves alter the behavior of the detector path, allowing engineers to shape dynamics with precision. The 10:1 opto compressor setting uses separate detector circuitry to emulate vintage light-controlled optical compressors, delivering smooth musical response. On the other side of the spectrum, Empirical Labs’ signature Nuke mode provides explosive limiting for high-energy drum processing. The unique curves of the Empirical Labs EL8X make it possible to emulate the dynamic response of countless classic compressors.

THREE DISTORTION MODES

For added harmonic coloration, the Empirical Labs EL8X compressor offers an advanced distortion circuit with three unique distortion profiles: Distort 1, Distort 2, and Distort 3. Distort 1 introduces subtle harmonic enhancement without altering the dynamics or frequency response too much, Distort 2 mimics the warmth of Class A tube saturation, and Distort 3 replicates the character of magnetic tape saturation. Empirical Labs’ unique control settings make it easy to add vintage-style coloration while maintaining clarity and punch.

BRITISH MODE

Inspired by the famous “all-buttons-in” trick of the 1176 limiter, the Empirical Labs EL8X’s British Mode delivers fast, aggressive compression with a distinct knee and envelope shape. British mode enhances transients and adds energy to drums, vocals, and instruments, making it ideal for achieving a punchy, in-your-face sound. With unique compression characteristics and a nearly brick wall limiting curve, the Empirical Labs EL8 X compressor’s British Mode is the perfect tool for smashing tracks into oblivion or blending with the dry signal for tasteful parallel compression.
