The Fairchild 670 was introduced in 1959 and now the most sought after and valuable piece of outboard recording gear in history. There were less than 1000 units produced and many unfortunately wound up in dumpsters when studios began re-tooling in the mid – 60’s and adding discrete solid state gear. Although it’s hard to say how many are still in circulation it is unanimous that its one of the most sonically amazing pieces of gear ever produced.
670 can be adjusted to work either as a compressor, with a ratio of 2 to 1 and a threshold of 5 db below normal program level; or as a peak limiter, with a compression ratio of 30 to 1 and a threshold of 10 db above normal program level
