Focal Trio6 8-inch Powered Studio Monitor Pair – Black
Three Reference Monitors in One
Focal’s Trio6 Be created quite a stir here at Sweetwater. Now, Focal ups the ante with its successor, dubbed simply Trio6. Incorporating numerous upgrades, Focal’s Trio6 is essentially three monitors in one. With a state-of-the-art driver complement consisting of an 8-inch woofer, a 5-inch midrange, and a 1.5-inch tweeter, Trio6 delivers reference-grade 3-way monitoring with a frequency response of 35Hz-40kHz and functions as a main/midfield monitor in small-to-midsize control rooms. Like its predecessor, Trio6’s Focus mode gives you 2-way monitoring using the 5-inch driver and the tweeter, restricting frequencies to between 80Hz and 40kHz. Trio6 also offers a new Focus mode that employs only the 5-inch midrange; with a frequency response of 100Hz-15kHz, this mode offers a modern take on the classic “cube” speakers that have been staples on console meter bridges for decades. For optimal acoustic integration and positioning, Trio6 is equipped with a rotatable tweeter/midrange panel for flexible placement in either vertical or horizontal orientation.
2-way Focus mode
As a 2-way monitor, Trio6 employs only its 5-inch midrange driver and tweeter, limiting frequencies to between 80Hz and 40kHz. This configuration is ideal for checking the quality of your mix on playback systems with limited low-frequency response. Although less extended on the low end, the frequency response curve of the 2-way configuration is identical to Trio6’s 3-way curve. This provides a perfect instant comparison that preserves the stereo spectrum and allows you to focus on the critical midrange frequencies, which are key to creating a mix that translates well outside your studio.
1-way Focus mode
In the 1970s, little cube-shaped speakers started appearing on console meter bridges and soon became ubiquitous in the control rooms of studios large and small. Intended to provide a real-world reference, they were designed to emulate the sound of car radios, transistor radios, and other playback systems of questionable quality and limited frequency range. Today, with steadily advancing technology vastly improving the performance of even inexpensive audio equipment, a new real-world reference is called for, and you’ll find it in Trio6’s 1-way Focus mode. It’s ideal for checking how your mix will sound on everything from run-of-the-mill television and computer speakers to the Bluetooth speaker hanging in your shower.
Optimized bass response in all modes
In Trio6, two front-facing bass-reflex ports ensure that the 5-inch “W” composite sandwich cone midrange driver performs identically in all Focus modes. The 8-inch “W” composite sandwich cone woofer has its own large laminar port integrated into the front baffle. Without concerns of rear-port saturation, the front ports make it easy to position your monitors near a wall while maintaining superior low-frequency linearity. What’s more, the 8-inch woofer’s large front port provides consistent bass performance at any SPL.
Focal’s beryllium inverted-dome tweeter
A hallmark of Focal is the company’s inverted-dome tweeter, which plays a significant role in Trio6’s outstanding performance. The particular advantage of the inverted dome is that it optimizes the mechanical coupling between the voice coil and the dome. Since the voice coil is fixed at mid-height on the dome, it can uniformly move the entire cone surface of Trio6. This design inherently offers high efficiency, precision, and energy, resulting in an extremely precise soundstage. Additionally, the use of beryllium for Trio6’s dome – a material noted for its incredible rigidity – ensures a speaker that, with near-perfect linearity, extends all the way up to 40kHz.
“W” composite sandwich cone and large laminar port
Trio6 takes advantage of Focal’s “W” composite sandwich cone for both its 5-inch midrange driver and 8-inch woofer. The unique characteristics of the cone allow for optimization of the frequency response curve, thanks to the total control of three key parameters: lightness, rigidity, and damping. The sound is amazingly transparent, exhibits excellent phase response, and has extremely low distortion. Additionally, the 5-inch midrange driver resides in its own isolated chamber within the cabinet, preventing sympathetic vibration from the other drivers and optimizing the driver’s acoustic performance.
